Mates and Dates and Friends
Following our post on "The Undateables" television programme on disabled people finding a partner, here's a few useful resources to try out for those looking for love or just friendship.
"Star Dating is a social club (part of the Stars in the Sky project) set up to help adults with learning disabilities in South Essex to: 1. Make new friends and develop some long term relationships. 2. Try out some new activities. 3. Meet a special person". There is a yearly joining fee (£20 at the time of writing this). Call BATIAS on 01375 389869 or e-mail: email@example.com to find out more.
"More than Friends is an Ilford based dating service for adults with a learning disability. We hope to help you meet someone special and perhaps even find love." It may be a bit far to travel to for some people. Call 020 8551 8800 or e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org for more.
SpecialFriends.com is said to be "The No.1 online community for people with learning/intellectual disabilities & their carers". This costs £5 per year to join. Their Special Hearts area looks to be a fledgling on-line dating agency.
DisabilityMatch.co.uk has been running for some years. "Find genuine fun and intimacy with disabled singles. Specialist disabled dating to meet single adult men and women who share your disability, condition or life challenge within a friendly vibrant disabled community."
Mencap have a Dating Agencies factsheet, which has some good advice on ways you can meet people, and why double dates are a good idea.
